The quake occurred at a depth of 73.3 kilometres, about nine kilometres from the coastal town of San Julian.
A local police officer described the tremor as “strong and sudden,” noting minor structural damage at a police station and visible movement of furniture. No immediate injuries were reported, though officers evacuated the building as a precaution against aftershocks.
Earthquakes occur frequently in the Philippines due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for intense seismic activity.
The country has recently experienced several strong quakes, including magnitudes 7.4 and 6.7 in Eastern Mindanao in October, which killed at least eight people. Earlier, a 6.9-magnitude quake in Cebu resulted in 76 deaths and widespread damage to more than 72,000 homes, according to official figures.
