The USGS said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), with its epicentre located about 68 kilometres (42 miles) east of Baculin, a village in the southern town of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur province.
Meanwhile, the Philippine seismology agency Phivolcs measured the tremor at 6.4 magnitude and a depth of 23 kilometres, warning residents of the possibility of damage and potential aftershocks following the earthquake.
