Through this vision, Sharjah has evolved under his leadership into a comprehensive civilisational project. Knowledge intersects with history, language advances alongside scientific research, and culture functions as a bridge for dialogue that extends beyond borders. Over time, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has come to occupy a distinguished place among leading global cultural figures, recognised for an intellectual and institutional legacy that continues to resonate across the Arab world and internationally.
This long journey of cultural production and institution-building was recently marked by international recognition when President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded His Highness the Grand Collar of the Camões Order, the highest cultural distinction conferred by Portugal. The honour reflects His Highness’s standing as one of the foremost figures of thought, culture and civilisational dialogue in the contemporary world.
The award carries particular significance as it was bestowed for the first time upon an Arab figure since the order was established. It represents an international acknowledgement of an Arab cultural contribution that reaffirmed the role of culture as a tool for human understanding, and positioned knowledge, language and history as enduring bridges between civilisations rather than points of division.
The Camões Order bears the name of Portugal’s most celebrated poet and a symbol of its literary and intellectual identity. It is awarded only to individuals whose work has left a profound human impact on culture and thought across borders. From this perspective, the awarding of the Grand Collar to the Ruler of Sharjah stands as a culmination of an intellectual journey spanning more than five decades, one that extended beyond patronage of culture to its active production, documentation, institutionalisation and long-term sustainability.
Throughout this journey, His Highness has authored around 200 publications across history, theatre and literature, contributing original research and interpretation to Arab and global historiography. His works are noted for their intellectual depth and cultural value, and have been translated into more than 20 languages worldwide.
The Camões honour is rooted in a long-standing cultural and academic relationship between the Ruler of Sharjah and Portugal, most notably through his collaboration with the historic University of Coimbra. Through His Highness’s patronage, the Centre for Arab Studies was established at the university, becoming the first specialised centre in Portugal dedicated to the Arabic language, its heritage and culture. The centre serves as a permanent hub for Arabic language teaching, academic and literary events, translation between Arabic and European languages, and the strengthening of cultural diplomacy between the Arab and European worlds.
In the same context, His Highness launched a project to digitise rare books and manuscripts at the UNESCO-listed Joanina Library, ensuring global access to this unique human heritage while preserving it for future generations through a cultural partnership between the Emirate of Sharjah and the university.
His Highness’s membership in the Portuguese Academy of Sciences since 2013 reflects the depth of his engagement with Portugal’s scientific community. This relationship was further affirmed in 2018 when the University of Coimbra awarded him an honorary doctorate, describing him as “a man who brings cultures together”.
More recently, His Highness launched the Portuguese edition of his historical work The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman: Events in the Annals from 1497 to 1757, during a ceremony held at the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon, attended by leading academics, historians and researchers specialising in maritime history and European colonial studies.
Since 1972, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi has received more than 80 orders, awards, honorary doctorates and prestigious academic appointments from leading universities, governments and cultural institutions around the world, in recognition of his contributions to culture, education, history, literature and international dialogue.
These honours reflect a sustained global acknowledgment of an intellectual and cultural legacy built over decades, alongside his role in establishing institutions dedicated to education, publishing, heritage and the arts.

At the heart of the Ruler of Sharjah’s cultural project stands the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, one of the most ambitious lexicographical initiatives in modern Arab history. Under His Highness’s direct leadership, the dictionary provides a comprehensive historical record of the Arabic language across the ages, placing it alongside global languages with fully documented linguistic histories. It serves researchers, scholars and future generations worldwide.
As a prolific historian, playwright, novelist and academic, His Highness did not limit his contribution to authorship and research. He established and supported a network of pioneering educational and cultural institutions in Sharjah and beyond. This ecosystem includes the American University of Sharjah, ranked among the top higher education institutions globally, alongside the University of Sharjah, Al Qasimia University, the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, and the universities of Khorfakkan, Kalba, Al Dhaid and Sharjah Maritime Academy. Together, they represent a long-term investment in human development and knowledge.
The Sharjah International Book Fair, founded by His Highness in 1982, remains a cornerstone of this project. Today, it has become the world’s largest platform for publishing rights exchange and a global hub connecting publishers, authors and readers across continents, reflecting Sharjah’s standing as a global capital of books and knowledge.
The awarding of the Grand Collar of the Camões Order stands as an honour that extends beyond the individual to recognise a broader cultural project. It represents international acknowledgment of a comprehensive Arab intellectual journey that redefined the role of a ruler in the modern era as a producer of knowledge, a builder of institutions and a central actor in global civilisational dialogue, leaving a lasting human legacy that transcends geography and time.
