Aimed at astronomy, physics, and computer science undergraduates, the workshop introduced participants to the latest concepts in binary stars and exoplanet detection via the transit method. It equipped them with practical training in astronomical data analysis, observational techniques, and modelling, while honing research skills through astronomical databases, the ADQL query language and modern scientific data processing methods.
The programme blended theoretical sessions unpacking core binary star concepts and observational astronomy basics with practical workshops on data analysis, celestial system modelling and specialist software tools. Participants also designed and executed their own research projects in the field.
Capping off the event was a field stargazing trip to Faya in Sharjah, where attendees mapped the night sky, observed stars, planets and nebulae using both advanced telescopes and the naked eye, and fielded expert answers to their questions. The outing amplified the workshop's practical edge, bridging classroom theory with real-world cosmic wonder.
