Sharjah 24: Mercedes made a strong start to the new Formula One season, with British driver George Russell winning the Australian Grand Prix ahead of his Italian teammate Kimi Antonelli on Sunday in Melbourne.

Superior preparation for the new regulations

The Mercedes duo finished the opening race where they started, demonstrating their superior preparation for the new regulations, ahead of the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc from Monaco and Briton Lewis Hamilton.

Russell cheered over the radio after crossing the finish line, telling his team, "I love this car, I love this engine."

Last season's champion, McLaren's British driver Lando Norris, finished fifth, ahead of four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who delivered a remarkable performance after starting from 20th place following a crash during the first qualifying session.
