Sharjah24: Spanish tennis and football stars Carlos Alcaraz and Lamine Yamal were crowned among the top winners at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards, held in Madrid. French club Paris Saint-Germain also secured a major honour after a historic season.

Alcaraz named sportsman of the year

World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, a two-time Grand Slam winner, received the Sportsman of the Year award. The Spaniard, currently recovering from a right wrist injury, said he would not rush his return to competition, even with the French Open approaching.

Sabalenka claims women’s award

In the women’s category, world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus was named Sportswoman of the Year following a dominant season in tennis.

Norris and Yamal recognised

British Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris was named Breakthrough of the Year, while Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal won the award for Best Young Athlete.

PSG named team of the year

Paris Saint-Germain were crowned Team of the Year after achieving a historic six-title haul, including the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, French Cup, Champions Trophy, UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.
