Sharjah 24 – WAM: The Democratic Republic of Congo has officially declared the end of a two-year monkeypox outbreak that caused more than 2,200 deaths and is no longer considered a national emergency.

Roger Kamba, Minister of Public Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, announced the decision in Kinshasa, stating that the situation has been brought under control. The outbreak, which made the country the epicenter of the virus in Central Africa, saw over 161,000 suspected cases, with around 37,000 confirmed.

The World Health Organisation had previously declared the outbreak a global health emergency as it spread beyond borders, but lifted that status last September.
