According to the United States Geological Survey, the 7.4-magnitude earthquake lasted between 10 and 20 seconds. It was centred 127 kilometres west of Ternate Island in North Maluku Province, at a depth of 35 kilometres.
Monitoring stations detected tsunami waves within less than half an hour. Waves reached 20 centimetres in the city of Bitung and 30 centimetres in West Halmahera.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said small waves could also reach parts of Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea, while confirming there is no threat to Hawaii, Guam, or other distant islands.
