Sharjah 24 – WAM: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) provided an initial assessment following Iranian missile and drone attacks on its Al Taweelah site in Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s largest aluminium production complexes.

Damage and operational shutdown

The attacks caused significant damage to the smelter, Casthouse, power plant, Al Taweelah alumina refinery, and recycling plant. The site was fully evacuated and placed under emergency shutdown procedures.

Timeline for resuming operations

EGA indicated that repairing infrastructure and progressively restoring each reduction cell could take up to 12 months to fully resume primary aluminium production. Partial operations at the alumina refinery and recycling plant may restart sooner, pending final damage assessments.

CEO statement

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, expressed concern for employees from over 40 nations, noting that no life-threatening injuries occurred and those affected are recovering. He highlighted the site’s global economic importance and pledged to support customers impacted by production delays.

Production capacities

In 2025, the Al Taweelah smelter produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal, the alumina refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes meeting 46% of EGA’s total alumina needs, and the recycling plant has an annual capacity of 185,000 tonnes. EGA also maintains substantial metal stock both locally and overseas.
