Sharjah 24 – WAM: Chinese researchers have found that higher intake of calcium and calcium-rich foods such as milk and yogurt is linked to a significantly reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a population with relatively low dietary calcium intake.

Case-control study findings

Published in the Food & Function journal, the study analysed 284 AMD patients and 284 matched controls who underwent eye examinations. The aim was to explore the relationship between dietary calcium intake and the likelihood of developing AMD.

Lower risk with higher calcium intake

The results showed that greater calcium consumption was associated with lower odds of AMD, particularly among individuals consuming less than 800 mg per 2000 kcal per day.

Public health implications

Researchers said the findings support current recommendations for adequate calcium intake and suggest that the health benefits of calcium may depend on its dietary sources.
