Inter, last season’s runner-up, narrowly escaped a setback against modest Verona, securing a hard-earned 2-1 win to continue their resurgence and tighten the race with defending champion Napoli. The match took place on Sunday during the tenth round of Serie A
Inter opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Polish international midfielder Piotr Zieliński, who volleyed home a cross from Turkish midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu following a corner kick.
The hosts managed to equalise in the 40th minute through Brazilian forward Giovanni, who struck from inside the box after a pass from Nigerian teammate Gift Orban. However, Inter regained the lead in stoppage time when Danish defender Martin Frese mistakenly headed Nicolo Barella’s cross into his own net in the third minute of added time.
This was Inter’s second consecutive win and seventh this season — their sixth in the last seven matches — lifting them to 21 points, just one behind Napoli, who were held to a goalless draw by Como on Saturday. Inter are level on points with Roma, who could move to the top of the table if they beat fourth-placed Milan later in the day.
On the other hand, Verona suffered their second consecutive defeat and fifth of the season, remaining with only five points in 18th place. They continue to share the bottom ranks with Pisa, Fiorentina, and Genoa, all still without a win this season.
