Buthaina Kazim, the founder of Cinema Akil, shared her thoughts: “Cinema has always been a bridge connecting people and helps us see the world through different perspectives. We are excited to team up with the Year of the Community, which aims to strengthen our connections and encourage everyone to participate actively in our community.”
After the film screenings, there will be a panel discussion about communication, culture, and community values. This discussion will feature Buthaina Kazim and Emirati filmmaker Sara Al Hashmi, with Mariam Al Dabbagh as the moderator.
The evening will showcase three Emirati films that delve into themes of memory, belonging, and imagination. The films include: “Why Is My Grandfather’s Bed in the Living Room?” by Sara Al Hashmi—a touching 7-minute film about a family reflecting on their past as their old house is taken down. The wooden bed remains a symbol of memories. “Um Al Dhabaab,” by Farah Al Qasimi—a 29-minute experimental film that tells the history of Ras Al Khaimah through a mythical viewpoint, challenging the traditional narratives and blending past and present with a creative twist. “A Small Dream,” by Sara Al Shehhi—a heartfelt 7-minute film about a young woman from Ras Al Khaimah who dreams of swimming freely in the sea, exploring themes of courage and self-expression.
This collaboration invites everyone—whether you make films or simply enjoy watching them—to join in and celebrate local stories as a vibrant reflection of our community’s spirit.
