Sharjah 24: The Portuguese national team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ireland in the penultimate round of the World Cup qualifiers, a match marked by Cristiano Ronaldo receiving a straight red card for the first time in his international career.

Ireland secures a historic win

Ireland defeated Portugal 2-0, denying them direct qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. This victory was Ireland’s first over Portugal since 2005, ending a streak of five winless encounters. Troy Parrott scored both goals in the first half, striking in the 17th and 45th minutes.

Ronaldo’s first international red card

The match took a dramatic turn when Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the 61st minute for elbowing Dara O'Shea. This was the first red card of Ronaldo’s career with the Portuguese national team, dating back to his debut in 2003 and occurring in his 226th international appearance.

Portugal’s qualification delayed

Portugal could have booked their ticket to the North American World Cup with a win, but the loss postponed their qualification to the final group match against Armenia. Their position remains at risk: if Portugal loses and Hungary defeats Ireland, Portugal could miss out on automatic qualification. Hungary remains in contention after their 1-0 win over Armenia.

Impact of absences and tactical changes

Portugal was noticeably affected by the absence of injured left-back Nuno Mendes. Coach Roberto Martínez introduced several changes compared to the lineup that drew 2-2 with Hungary in the previous round. Despite an early threat from Ronaldo, whose shot was saved by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, followed by attempts from Vitinha and Ronaldo, Ireland capitalized on their chances.

Ireland’s clinical finishing

Parrott opened the scoring with a header after Liam Scales redirected the ball from a corner. Portugal’s attempts to equalize lacked sharpness, and Parrott doubled the lead just before halftime after a swift counter-attack assisted by O'Shea.

Second-half struggles for Portugal

Martínez introduced Nélson Semedo and Retano Veiga at halftime to boost the offense, but Portugal’s dominance did not translate into goals against Ireland’s disciplined defense. The setback worsened when Ronaldo was sent off, leaving Portugal with ten men.

Final minutes and missed opportunities

Despite late pressure and further substitutions, Portugal managed only two shots on goal in the closing stages, both saved by the Irish goalkeeper. Ronaldo exited the field applauding the crowd, who responded with boos and whistles, as Portugal’s hopes for direct qualification now hang on their final match.
