Sharjah24 - AFP: Malaysia announced on Wednesday that the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will resume at the end of December, more than ten years after the aircraft disappeared.

A decade-long aviation mystery

MH370, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 passengers, vanished from radar on March 8, 2014, while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It remains one of aviation’s most baffling mysteries.

Two-thirds of those on board were Chinese nationals, with the rest comprising Malaysians, Indonesians, Australians, as well as Indian, American, Dutch and French passengers.

Despite the largest search operation in aviation history, the aircraft has never been located.

Search to resume on 30 December 2025

Malaysia’s transport ministry stated that the “deep-sea search for the missing wreckage of MH370 will resume on 30 December 2025”.

Maritime exploration company Ocean Infinity will lead the operation in a “targeted area assessed to have the highest likelihood of finding the aircraft”.

The southern Indian Ocean search was paused in April due to unsuitable conditions. As before, the mission operates under a “no find, no fee” arrangement.

Previous search efforts

Ocean Infinity previously conducted an unsuccessful search in 2018 and agreed to undertake a renewed mission this year.

An earlier Australia-led operation covered 120,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean over three years but only recovered scattered debris.

The ministry said the renewed effort reflects its commitment to offering closure to the families of the victims.

Families continue to demand answers

Relatives have long pressed Malaysian authorities for clarity. Many expressed hope earlier this year that a new search could provide long-awaited answers.

On the 11th anniversary of the disappearance, families—particularly those of Chinese passengers—gathered in Beijing, holding signs such as “Give us back our loved ones!” and asking, “When will the waiting and torment end?”

Unresolved questions and speculation

The plane’s disappearance has inspired numerous theories, including suggestions of pilot involvement.

A 2018 investigation cited air traffic control shortcomings and noted that the aircraft’s course was manually altered. However, the 495-page report found no conclusive explanation and did not rule out the involvement of a third party.
