Sharjah 24 – AFP: Authorities in Indonesia and Thailand raced to rescue hundreds of missing people as floods and landslides across the region killed more than 600. Heavy monsoon rains this week affected Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, leaving thousands stranded without shelter or supplies.

Indonesia: Isolated areas and rising toll

In Indonesia, the hardest-hit areas on Sumatra remain largely unreachable. Central Tapanuli and Sibolga city required urgent aid, prompting the deployment of two warships from Jakarta. The death toll rose to 442, with 402 still missing and at least 646 injured. Villages such as Sungai Nyalo were left coated in thick mud, and roads remain blocked.

Thailand: Relief efforts and criticism

Thailand reported at least 162 deaths, one of the worst floods in a decade. The government offered compensation for affected families, but public criticism grew over the handling of the crisis, leading to the suspension of two local officials.

Malaysia: Floods affect northern regions

Two people were killed in northern Malaysia’s Perlis state as floodwaters submerged large areas.

Monsoon and climate impact

The annual monsoon season, worsened by a tropical storm, caused extreme flooding. Climate change is intensifying rainfall, flash floods, and strong winds across the region, contributing to the severity of the disaster.
