Sharjah 24: Jonas Andersson of Team Sweden set the fastest time in the “Kilometer Breaker” speed race on Saturday at Khalid Lagoon, taking an early lead at the Sharjah Grand Prix, the final round of the UIM F1H2O World Championship.

Championship finale underway in Sharjah

The Sharjah Grand Prix is being staged under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Executive Council. The 24th edition of the championship, organized by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, concludes on Sunday with the main race.

Andersson moves into title contention

Andersson’s victory in the Sharjah round’s “Kilometer Breaker” lifted him to 85 points, placing him second in the overall standings. He now trails championship leader Shaun Torrente of Victory Team by 14 points, with Torrente holding 99 points. Alek Wikström remains third with 78 points.

Pole position secured for main race

Andersson completed the 2,057-meter Khalid Lagoon course in 47.191 seconds to secure pole position for Sunday’s main race, the Sharjah Grand Prix – Road to Sharjah, which starts at noon. He finished 0.119 seconds ahead of Alek Wikström, while Shaun Torrente placed third with a time of 47.558 seconds.

Sprint races add to title battle

In the first sprint race, Andersson claimed victory to earn 10 bonus points, followed by Marcelik Bartek and Stefan Arand. The second sprint race was won by Torrente, who added 10 points to his total, with Rusty White finishing second and Grant Trask third.
