Sharjah24: The sixth performance of the 19th Emirates Children’s Theatre Festival featured the participation of renowned Gulf stage and television star Haifa Hussain, who played the role of the queen in the play The Kingdom of Elira. The production was presented by Khorfakkan Arts Theatre, written by Sheikha Sara bint Mohammed Al Qasimi and directed by Abdullah Al Haribi. The performance was warmly received by young audiences, who engaged enthusiastically with its moral and educational messages.

A tale of curiosity and courage

The story is set in a land called the Kingdom of Elira, which had long lived in peace, harmony and mutual love. Events take a dramatic turn when a young girl, driven by curiosity, tampers with a precious stone that provides the kingdom with energy, hoping to double its power so tasks can be completed more quickly. Her actions open the door to greedy intruders, who deceive their way into the kingdom and steal the stone. The queen and the people of Elira then rise to defend their homeland, confront the villains and restore safety and peace.

Messages for young audiences

The play delivered several important messages for children, foremost that the homeland is more important than anything else and that its people, men and women alike, have a duty to defend it. It also highlighted how unchecked curiosity can lead to serious consequences, while stressing the values of cooperation, solidarity and unity within a community.

Direction and stagecraft

Director Abdullah Al Haribi created striking stage visuals that helped convey the play’s ideas clearly to young viewers. The dialogue was both accessible and thoughtful, supporting the actors in building strong characters. Music and songs played a key dramatic role, reinforcing the director’s vision, alongside costumes, make-up and accessories, all employed with clear artistic awareness.

Return to the stage

The Kingdom of Elira marked Haifa Hussain’s return to the theatre after years away from the stage. Her participation added significant artistic weight to the festival and brought joy to both children and adult audiences.

Cast and creative team

The play starred Dhiab Nasser, Issa Murad, Faisal Mousa, Latifa Jawhar, Waad Tareq, Wael Mohammed, Ali Mohammed, Hala Ahmed Al Zaabi and Ammar Mohammed. Costumes were designed by Inas Ezzat, lighting by Ibrahim Khalil, make-up by Mohammed Jassim, set design by Fares Jaddawi and choreography by Zain Zuhair.

The Emirates Children’s Theatre Festival concludes on Saturday, the 27th of this month, with the play The Empty Frame by members of Rubu’ Qarn for Theatre and Performing Arts, followed by the closing ceremony and the distribution of awards to the winners.
