Focus on renewable energy and innovation
The Assembly focuses on regional energy transitions, electricity grids, energy planning, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and finance, including sustainable aviation fuel. Discussions also cover renewable energy’s role in agri-food systems and green manufacturing.
Record growth in renewables
IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera highlighted that 92% of new electricity capacity last year came from renewables, with nearly 700 gigawatts expected this year—twice the total nuclear capacity built in 70 years. He emphasized that renewable energy is now the most cost-effective and resilient source of electricity.
Economic and strategic importance
La Camera stressed that countries adopting renewables quickly will gain economic competitiveness, while slow adopters risk falling behind. He highlighted the need for international cooperation and affordable financing to accelerate the global energy transition.
Growing global confidence in IRENA
The agency now has 171 members, reflecting growing confidence in its role in guiding the world toward a secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy future.
