Brighton avoided a first defeat in four matches, extending their unbeaten streak and lifting their tally to 30 points, three ahead of Bournemouth. The result also preserved Brighton’s strong home record this season, with just one league defeat on their own ground.
Despite the absence of Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo, who recently joined Manchester City, Bournemouth have scored four goals across their last two matches, having previously exited the FA Cup on penalties against Newcastle. Brighton welcomed back Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba and Gambian forward Yankuba Minteh from international duty and injury respectively.
Elsewhere, the round saw Manchester City lose 2–0 to rivals Manchester United, while leaders Arsenal were held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa suffered a surprise 1–0 defeat to Everton.
