Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research (SCHESR), in cooperation with the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), UK, organised an advanced workshop entitled “Capacity Building in Higher Education Quality Assurance.” The workshop, held at the Council’s headquarters, was attended by a select group of academics and quality and accreditation specialists from higher education institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah.

The workshop aimed to develop the capacity of higher education institutions in the Emirate, introduce the Outcomes-Based framework (OBF), and enhance readiness for international institutional accreditation against the standards of the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) UK, through a specialised training programme that included interactive workshops.

Showcasing global best practices in education

The workshop addressed several key areas, including developing academic and administrative processes, measuring educational outcomes, reviewing international accreditation requirements and standards, building quality policies, and identifying the performance indicators required for international reviews, while also showcasing global best practices in this field.

His Excellency Professor Dr Mohammed Yousef Bani Yas, Member of the SCHESR Permanent Executive Committee and Chairman of the Quality Assurance and Governance Committee, affirmed that the workshop marks a pivotal milestone in the development of the quality system in higher education institutions in the emirate. He noted that adopting international accreditation standards, foremost among them those of the British Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), contributes to improving institutional performance, enhancing the credibility of academic programmes, and ensuring their alignment with global best practices in higher education.

Building integrated quality and governance systems

His Excellency Professor Dr Mohammed Yousef Bani Yas added that the Quality Assurance and Governance Committee supports institutions in building integrated quality and governance systems, ensuring the sustainability of development, improving educational and research outcomes, and enhancing the competitiveness of Sharjah's higher education institutions at both the regional and international levels.

Advancing the higher education system in the emirate

Her Excellency Dr Aisha Bukhatir Al Shamsi, Secretary-General of SCHESR, emphasised that organising this workshop is part of the Council's ongoing efforts to advance the higher education system in the emirate. She noted that investing in capacity building and promoting a culture of quality and governance contributes to improved educational outcomes and the competitiveness of higher education institutions, both locally and internationally. She added that the Council is committed to supporting higher education institutions in Sharjah in integrating national requirements with international standards, thereby enhancing their readiness for institutional accreditation and keeping pace with modern trends in higher education development.

The workshop is organised within the SCHESR strategy to support sustainable development and consolidate the Emirate's position as a leading centre for academic excellence and quality education.
