Sharjah 24 – WAM: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation in Fujairah and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London at his office in the Emiri Court.

Academic collaboration to launch manuscript arts programme

The agreement establishes an academic partnership to launch a specialised programme in manuscript arts that combines theoretical study with practical application, following the highest academic standards.

Signing representatives

The MoU was signed by Dr Esra Al Hamal, Managing Director of the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation, and Professor Adam Habib, Director of SOAS University of London.

Cultural partnerships to support Arab-Islamic heritage

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the importance of cultural partnerships in enhancing Fujairah’s arts and culture sector, promoting expertise exchange, and preserving Arab-Islamic heritage and artistic traditions. He also noted the support of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi for cultural and intellectual development projects.

Degree programmes and structure

The MoU outlines collaboration to offer two academic degrees: a Postgraduate Diploma in Manuscript Arts and a Master of Arts in Manuscript Arts. Students can complete a one-year diploma and optionally continue to a second year for a master’s degree.

Curriculum and practical training

The programme includes practical courses in traditional Arabic calligraphy, geometric and floral ornamentation, bookbinding, and miniature painting, alongside theoretical studies on manuscript cultures and Arabic and Islamic manuscript history. The programme will begin in September 2026 and will be offered exclusively in Fujairah.

Objectives and career opportunities

The curriculum aims to preserve manuscript heritage by blending theoretical knowledge with traditional skills, preparing graduates to produce manuscripts according to historical and artistic principles. It offers opportunities for graduates in graphic design, architecture, conservation, library sciences, Arabic language, and related fields, enhancing career prospects in art, design, heritage, media, and cultural institutions.

Attendance

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, Director of the Office of the Crown Prince of Fujairah, and a delegation from SOAS University of London.
