The English Football League said the penalty was imposed after Leicester were found to have breached profitability and sustainability regulations, a decision that immediately altered their position in the Championship.
The deduction dropped the former Premier League champions from 17th to 20th in the table. Leicester, who were relegated from the topflight last season, are now among the teams battling near the foot of the standings.
An independent commission concluded that the club exceeded the permitted financial threshold by approximately £21 million over the three seasons leading up to the 2023–24 campaign, the year in which Leicester secured promotion back to the Premier League.
