Sharjah 24 – AFP: A tram derailed in Milan on Friday, hitting a building and killing two people while injuring 38, Mayor Giuseppe Sala confirmed. One victim was struck as the tram left the tracks, and the second was a passenger.

Firefighters and ambulances attended the scene, aiding injured passengers. Initial investigations suggest the driver missed a track switch and bypassed the last stop. The tram was new, and the driver was experienced.

Witnesses reported the tram moving at high speed, crashing into a tree and a restaurant window. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini expressed condolences. Prosecutor Marcello Viola called the impact “devastating.”

The accident comes shortly after Milan hosted the 2026 Winter Olympics and ahead of the Paralympics and Milan Fashion Week. The 25-metre tram seats 66 passengers.
