Italy’s concern over regional escalation
In a press statement, Tajani said his country is deeply concerned about the escalation, adding: “We do not understand why Iran decided to attack Gulf states such as the UAE, Kuwait, and Oman, as well as Turkey, without any reason. These countries have not previously taken any action against Iran.”
Italy’s solidarity with the Gulf States
Tajani affirmed Italy’s support for the Gulf states, stating: “We are concerned about this dangerous escalation, and we understand the concerns of all the Gulf states and express our solidarity with them,” noting the large number of Italian citizens residing in the UAE.
Close Emirati-Italian cooperation
He added: “There are more than 100,000 Italians living between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and we thank the Emirati authorities, who defend us and assist us in evacuation operations when needed,” highlighting the strong cooperation between Rome and Abu Dhabi in responding to security developments.
Practical steps to protect allies
Tajani noted that Italy has taken practical measures to enhance the protection of its allies, saying: “We have decided to provide air support to some Gulf states to assist them and protect their citizens as well, given the escalating fears of the expansion of Iranian attacks.”
Reinforcing military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean
The Italian Foreign Minister revealed plans to bolster Italy’s military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean: “We will send a destroyer to Cyprus to defend it and our allies in the region.” He emphasized that this step aims to support regional security, deter threats, and reiterated Italy’s stance that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, which would threaten global peace.
Warning against continued escalation
Finally, Tajani called on Tehran to stop its attacks, warning that continued military escalation undermines regional stability and heightens tensions in the Middle East.
