Theatre pioneers recall early journeys at STD

Sharjah24: An evening titled “Theatrical Beginnings: Experiences and Challenges” saw a rich exchange of memories and experiences, forming part of the cultural programme of the 35th Sharjah Theatre Days (STD). The event was attended by Ahmed Bu Rahima and featured prominent Arab theatre figures: Mohammed Al Ameri, Sameh Mehran and Yousuf Al Balooshi. It was moderated by Tunisian artist Tahar Ben Issa.

Dr Sameh Mehran reflected on his upbringing in a culturally rich environment that nurtured his passion for reading and theatre. He outlined his academic journey through literature studies to a doctorate in aesthetics, and his professional path in directing, highlighting notable productions and awards throughout his career.

A journey of dedication and creativity

Mohammed Al Ameri shared his early days as an actor before moving into directing, describing a journey characterised by continuous learning across theatrical disciplines. He highlighted key productions and his recognition in both regional and international festivals, earning him the nickname “award hunter.”

From visual arts to theatre direction

Yousuf Al Balooshi discussed his shift from visual arts to theatre, emphasising the strong connection between scenography and stage direction. He expressed his passion for theatre despite working in cinema and drama, citing award-winning productions from his career.

Celebrating theatrical experience and exchange

The evening concluded with debates on artistic identity and creative development, followed by a tribute from Ahmed Bu Rahima, who presented the speakers with certificates of appreciation.
