Iraq closes Shalamcheh border after airstrikes on Iranian side

The Shalamcheh crossing is a key route for importing vegetables and other food supplies from Iran. Prolonged disruptions could quickly affect local markets, traders and border officials warned.

Casualties from airstrikes

At least five Iraqis were seriously injured in the strikes targeting a passenger reception area on the Iranian side. Iraqi police recovered one body, while most of the wounded remain in critical condition in hospitals.

Border authorities plan to restore movement

Iraqi authorities said Iranian officials notified them that truck and passenger movement would resume once transit and passport systems are restored.

Additional security concerns

Hours after the Shalamcheh strikes, Iraq briefly halted movement at the Safwan crossing with Kuwait following explosions on the Kuwaiti side. Officials reported drones hovering overhead just before the blasts.
