US President Donald Trump announced that he is prepared to suspend bombing and military strikes against Iran for two weeks, on the condition that the Islamic Republic agrees to the complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The statement was issued just one hour before a deadline for launching large-scale attacks.
Trump described the move as a “double-sided ceasefire,” indicating that both sides would halt hostilities during the proposed two-week period.
He stated that US military objectives have already been achieved and exceeded, adding that negotiations with Iran are at an advanced stage toward a comprehensive agreement aimed at securing long-term peace in Iran and across the Middle East.
Trump revealed that the United States has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a workable foundation for further negotiations.
The announcement followed a last-minute diplomatic initiative by Pakistan to prevent large-scale US strikes on Iran. Earlier, Trump had warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if no agreement was reached.
He added that most contentious issues between Washington and Tehran have already been resolved, and that the proposed two-week pause would provide sufficient time to finalise and formalise a comprehensive agreement.
