Sharjah24: Real Madrid were held to a 1–1 home draw against Girona in Matchday 31 of La Liga, dealing another blow to their fading title hopes. The result takes them to 70 points, six behind leaders Barcelona, who could extend the gap to nine with a win over Espanyol on Saturday. Girona sit 12th on 38 points.

European challenge ahead

Alongside fading title hopes, Real Madrid now travel to Bavaria to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, after losing the first leg 1–2 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

First-half chances

The first real chance came in the 10th minute when Brahim Díaz delivered a low cross from the left, but Kylian Mbappé was denied by a last-ditch clearance. Girona responded four minutes later through Azzedine Ounahi, whose powerful effort was saved by Andriy Lunin.

Jude Bellingham then narrowly missed the target from a Díaz cross, while Federico Valverde tested Paulo Gazzaniga with a strong long-range shot.

Just before halftime, Claudio Echeverri nearly scored after dribbling past Eduardo Camavinga, but slipped at the crucial moment.

Goals and response

Valverde finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, which Gazzaniga failed to keep out.

Vinícius Júnior nearly doubled the lead shortly after, but Girona equalised in the 61st minute through a fine left-footed strike from Thomas Lemar.
