Sharjah24/WAM: Three workers, including a father and his son, have died after a traditional gold mine was flooded in Badakhshan province in northern Afghanistan, according to a police official on Friday.

The incident occurred in the Shahri Buzurg district when water suddenly inundated the mine, said provincial police spokesperson Ihsanullah Kamgar. He added that the number of miners trapped inside remains unclear, while security forces continue efforts to locate possible survivors and carry out evacuations.

Safety concerns in informal mining sector

Fatal accidents are common in Afghanistan’s informal mining sector, where non-standard practices, a lack of modern equipment, illegal extraction by untrained workers, and poor safety measures frequently lead to deaths among impoverished labourers.
