Sharjah 24: Shabab Al Ahli and Al Wahda return to AFC Champions League Elite duty on Tuesday, with both sides facing decisive Round of 16 ties in Jeddah.

The long-delayed West Region fixtures will finally be settled over a single leg, following the Asian Football Confederation’s decision to stage the remaining matches in a centralised format with no margin for error.

High stakes in Jeddah

Shabab Al Ahli are first up, taking on Iran’s Tractor at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium (6:45pm UAE time), knowing only a win will carry them through. Later in the evening, Al Wahda face a sterner test against Al Ittihad at King Abdullah International Stadium, with kick-off at 10pm.

There is a sense of familiarity for Shabab Al Ahli, who have already come up against Tractor earlier in the competition, but head coach Paulo Sousa was clear that the past counts for little now.

“This is a different moment,” he said on the eve of the match. “We are at a decisive stage, and the focus has to be at its highest level if we want to go through.”

Sousa is expected to stick to his side’s usual approach, building possession higher up the pitch while remaining disciplined off the ball — a balance he believes will be key.

Across the city, Al Wahda will be looking to upset the odds against an Al Ittihad side playing on home soil. Head coach Darko Milanič struck a confident note, insisting his players are ready for the challenge.

“We have quality in this squad, players who can make the difference in matches like these,” he said. “The objective is clear, and we will fight to achieve it.”

Road to the quarter-finals

Elsewhere in the competition, two all-Gulf ties get the Round of 16 underway, with Al Ahli facing Al Duhail and Al Hilal meeting Al Sadd.

Looking ahead, the pathway is already mapped out. The winners of Shabab Al Ahli and Tractor will face Thailand’s Buriram United in the quarter-finals, while either Al Wahda or Al Ittihad will go on to meet Japan’s Machida Zelvia.

For both UAE sides, though, the equation is simple: one match, one opportunity, and no second chances.
