Reference to international resolutions
Al Marar highlighted UN Security Council Resolution 2817, along with decisions from the International Maritime Organization and the UN Human Rights Council, which condemn actions that threaten or restrict navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that the strait must remain open in line with international law.
Warning over regional and global risks
He warned that allowing Iran to use the strait as a political pressure tool would undermine global stability and set a dangerous precedent for freedom of navigation in key international waterways.
Allegations of maritime violations
Al Marar cited alleged violations including illegal fees on passing vessels, attacks, threats to shipping, mining activities, and discriminatory practices against foreign ships, all in breach of international law and relevant UN resolutions.
Demand for accountability and compensation
He stated that Iran must be held responsible and required to compensate for damages caused by its actions, including environmental and maritime impacts.
Global economic consequences
He warned that any disruption to the Strait of Hormuz would have serious global consequences for energy security, supply chains, and food production, particularly affecting developing countries.
Call for collective international action
Al Marar emphasised the need for coordinated international efforts to ensure lasting freedom of navigation. The UAE reaffirmed its readiness to work with partners to keep the strait open in accordance with international law.
Unified international position
Ahead of the session, more than 90 countries participated in a press engagement in Bahrain, issuing a joint message calling on Iran to immediately cease unlawful actions and ensure unimpeded maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
