Sharjah24 - AFP: Cristiano Ronaldo endured another disappointing setback after his Saudi club Al Nassr FC suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Japan’s Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final on Saturday.

The defeat delayed Ronaldo’s pursuit of his first major trophy with Al Nassr since joining the club in 2023 on a lucrative contract. Despite dominating much of the second half in front of 26,000 fans at King Saud University Stadium, the Saudi side failed to overturn Gamba Osaka’s lead.

Decisive goal gives Gamba Osaka historic victory

The Japanese club scored the decisive goal in the 29th minute when forward Deniz Hummet finished from the edge of the box after receiving a through pass from Issam Jebali.

Al Nassr coach Jorge Jesus admitted his side struggled early in the match before taking control later on, but said Gamba capitalised on their only real chance.

Saudi Pro League title race still alive

The defeat came just days after Al Nassr missed the chance to secure the Saudi Pro League title following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Al Hilal SFC, caused by a late own goal from goalkeeper Bento.

Ronaldo had earlier expressed optimism on social media, saying the “dream is close” after the league setback. Al Nassr remain two points ahead of Al Hilal with one league match remaining and can still clinch the Saudi Pro League title against Damac FC on Thursday, while Al Hilal face Al Fayha FC on the same day.

Jorge Jesus calls for quick recovery

Jorge Jesus stressed that the team must quickly recover and refocus on winning the league title, describing it as their next crucial final.
