Sharjah 24: Real Madrid has confirmed that Austrian international defender David Alaba will leave the club at the end of his fifth season with the Spanish giants.

The 33-year-old center-back will depart when his contract expires at the end of June, bringing an end to a five-year spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. His final three seasons were heavily impacted by recurring injuries.

In a statement, Real Madrid expressed its “gratitude and affection” for a player who was part of one of the club’s most successful eras.

Trophy-laden spell in Madrid

Alaba joined Real Madrid in 2021 after winning every major title with Bayern Munich. During his time in Spain, the Austria captain made 131 appearances and helped the club secure 11 trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga crowns, and one Copa del Rey triumph.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez praised Alaba’s contribution, saying the defender had earned the admiration of supporters through his commitment and professionalism, while highlighting his role in the club’s run to its 14th Champions League title in 2022.

“Real Madrid will always be his home,” Pérez said.

Next chapter awaits

Alaba, who has earned 112 international caps for Austria and continues to captain his national team, will become a free agent and can now negotiate with clubs ahead of a potential first FIFA World Cup appearance with Austria.
