Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior answered recent controversy in the best possible way — by scoring the decisive goal to seal qualification for the 15-time European champions.
Vinícius had already netted the winner in the first leg, a match that reportedly led to the suspension of a Benfica midfielder following allegations of racist abuse directed at him. In the return leg, he once again proved decisive.
Benfica struck first through Rafa Silva in the 14th minute. However, Real Madrid responded almost immediately, with Aurélien Tchouaméni equalizing just two minutes later (16’).
Although the draw would have been enough to send Madrid through, Vinícius ensured victory with a composed finish in the 80th minute, sealing a 2–1 win on the night.
After the match, Tchouaméni praised his teammate, saying: “This is our Vinícius. Honestly, we didn’t start the game well, but we maintained our confidence.”
Coach Álvaro Arbeloa guided his side to qualification despite the absence of injured star striker Kylian Mbappé, demonstrating the squad’s depth and resilience.
