Sharjah24: The University of Sharjah (UOS), through the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at its College of Engineering, hosted Nuclear Science Week in collaboration with the American Nuclear Society (ANS). The event, aimed at high school students, sought to improve understanding of nuclear energy, emphasise its peaceful applications, and increase awareness about the importance of radiation safety in daily life.

The event attracted faculty from Engineering and Science, students, and educators from across the emirate. It introduced young learners to nuclear science and its future potential. Prof. Olabi, Director at UOS, welcomed participants and emphasised the university’s support for scientific curiosity and innovation. He stated that nuclear energy helps reduce carbon emissions, combat climate change, and realise the UAE’s sustainability goals. Prof. Olabi encouraged students to pursue research in this promising and innovative field.

Engaging activities and hands-on learning

The Nuclear Science Week programme included a series of guided laboratory tours, interactive experiments, and educational lectures, enabling students to explore the fundamentals of nuclear energy in an engaging, hands-on way. Participants learned about the role of nuclear science in medicine, industry, and energy production, and took part in friendly competitions and demonstrations that tested their understanding of scientific principles.

Through these activities, students gained firsthand exposure to research environments and cutting-edge technologies utilised in nuclear engineering. The event also emphasised career opportunities in nuclear energy and related sectors, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers to contribute to the UAE’s clean energy and sustainability agenda.
