SSSD enhances physiotherapy services for seniors

Kholoud Al Ali, Director of the Senior Services Centre, explained that physiotherapy services were first introduced in 2003 alongside the start of home care, marking nearly 22 years of development. Originally based at the Elderly Care Home, the service later expanded to include persons with disabilities and mental health patients. A dedicated hotline (800700), launched in 2007, sped up access, allowing families to request physiotherapy services directly.

Comprehensive home-care model across Sharjah

Home care teams consist of doctors, nurses, social workers, and psychologists who offer medical, social, and rehabilitative support. Physiotherapy is available through three methods: home sessions based on medical assessments, morning sessions at the Asala Club in the Senior Services Centre, and services at the Elderly Care Home. Mobile units deliver one or two weekly sessions, depending on each patient’s treatment plan.

Mobile units and integrated rehabilitation services

There are 10 mobile units in Sharjah and 23 across the central and eastern regions. Beyond treatment, teams train caregivers to provide basic physiotherapy, gradually reducing reliance on specialists once caregivers become competent. Services include wound care, medication management, personal care, and recreational and rehabilitative activities to enhance overall wellbeing.

Access requirements and inclusive services

To access services, applicants must contact the hotline, register online, or visit the centre. Eligibility requires being a Sharjah citizen aged 60 or above, residing in the emirate, and holding a medical report confirming physiotherapy needs. Additional paid sessions are available to the public during evening hours at the Elderly Care Home, while Asala Club offers free morning sessions to its registered members.

Advanced equipment and specialised physiotherapy tools

Al Ali highlighted that physiotherapy facilities are equipped with advanced equipment, including electrotherapy units, rehabilitation tools, stationary bikes, resistance bands, balance boards, hot and cold therapy units, and mobility aids such as braces, splints, and orthotics. Treatment rooms for both men and women provide comfort, privacy, and equal access to high-quality care.
