Sharjah24-AFP: At least 16 high school students celebrating their graduation, along with their bus driver, died on Sunday when their vehicle plunged into a ravine in northwest Colombia.

The group, aged between 16 and 18, was returning from the Caribbean towns of Tolu and Covenas after a celebratory trip. The bus fell approximately 40 metres, injuring 20 others. Officials in Bello, near Medellín, said work was ongoing to confirm how many of the victims were minors.

Cause under investigation amid survivor accounts

Antioquia Department Governor Andrés Julián Rendón stated that the cause of the accident is still under investigation. In a video shared by the governor, one survivor recounted: “I was asleep and all of a sudden I heard screams, and from that moment on I don't remember anything.” The dangerous location required rescuers to transport survivors on stretchers up steep terrain.

Security concerns complicate rescue operations

Local police stated that the crash occurred in an area where the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group is still active, which compelled firefighters and security personnel to take special precautions during rescue operations. The ELN has instructed civilians to avoid commercial travel for 72 hours as the group conducts military exercises.

Condolences from Colombia’s president

President Gustavo Petro expressed his sorrow on X, writing: “I don't like it when young people die. Even less when they're going to study or to relax happily.” The tragedy comes as road authorities report an average of 22 traffic-related deaths per day in Colombia in 2024.
