Colombian military plane crash leaves dozens feared dead

Sharjah 24 – AFP: A Colombian military C-130 Hercules aircraft carrying 125 troops and crew crashed shortly after takeoff on Monday near Puerto Leguizamo, close to the Ecuadorian border, with many feared dead.

Casualties and survivors

While the official death toll remains unconfirmed, reports indicate that up to 80 الأشخاص may have been killed, with around 48 survivors found so far. The aircraft was carrying 114 troops and 11 crew members.

Crash scene and response

The plane went down in a jungle area, leaving burning wreckage scattered across the ground. Images showed heavy smoke rising above the forest as civilians gathered near the debris. Military units were quickly deployed to the site.

Official reaction

Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed “deep sorrow,” stating that the number of victims and the cause of the crash are still under investigation, describing the حادث as “a deeply painful event for the country.”

Regional context

The crash occurred in a region recently witnessing intensified military operations against drug cartels and militias. It marks the second C-130 crash in South America within a month, following a fatal incident in Bolivia.
