The bus was travelling from the capital Jakarta to Yogyakarta when it approached a turn at a highway interchange at what officials described as a “fairly high” speed. The vehicle lost control, collided with a barrier, and flipped onto its side, trapping passengers inside.
Budiono, head of the local search and rescue agency, said that 34 people were evacuated from the crash site. Fifteen victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and another passenger died after being transferred to hospital. Several injured survivors were taken to Semarang for further medical treatment.
Footage released by rescue teams showed emergency personnel rescuing victims as the overturned bus lay on the roadway.
