Sharjah 24: The Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, in cooperation with Al Sharqiya of Kalba Channel, is organising the Sharjah International Lifesaving Championship as part of the third edition of the Khorfakkan Marine Festival. The championship is the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates and is held under the umbrella of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS).

Enhancing coastal safety

The championship supports continued efforts to build a structured and professional approach to marine lifesaving, helping to strengthen safety and rescue operations along the UAE’s coastline. It also aims to identify and develop national talent and equip athletes to represent the UAE at regional and international competitions.

Global and Olympic participation

The event aims to prepare qualified cadres capable of competing in upcoming world championships, foremost among them the World Lifesaving Championship scheduled to take place in South Africa in December 2026. It also supports long-term preparation for participation in the Olympic Games – Australia 2032, where lifesaving will be included in the Olympic programme for the first time.

Developing coaching expertise

In support of the championship, the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) will organise a referees' course from December 26–27, marking the first official course of its kind in the UAE. The International Life Saving Federation (ILS) will also hold a specialised coaching course to enhance the readiness of national cadres in line with the highest international standards.

Specialised marine sports

This initiative reflects the commitment of the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club and its partners to developing specialised marine sports and reinforcing the position of the Emirate of Sharjah and the UAE as regional and international hubs for hosting internationally accredited championships.

Leadership perspective

Ahmed Issa Al Hosani, Director General of Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, said the championship represents an important milestone in the development of specialised marine sports in the UAE, as it is the first event of its kind in the country to be held under the umbrella of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS). He stressed the club’s focus on creating a professional environment that strengthens marine rescue and safety systems and prepares national talents for international participation, including the Olympic Games Australia 2032.
