Sharjah24-AFP: At least 18 people were killed, and several homes were swept away after a landslide struck eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following heavy overnight rainfall, local sources said on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the village of Kashebere in North Kivu province, an area facing severe security and humanitarian challenges.

Local administrator Emile Kubuya said that 34 people were initially trapped by the landslide, with 22 bodies recovered so far, while others remain buried deep under mud and debris. A Kashebere resident confirmed that entire families were affected, noting that eight bodies were found inside a single house.

Limited rescue capacity amid insecurity

Healthcare workers reported receiving at least five injured survivors, warning that rescue efforts were severely hampered by thick mud, fallen rocks, and a lack of heavy equipment. The area has limited state presence due to ongoing instability linked to armed groups, complicating emergency response operations.

Region prone to natural disasters

Kashebere lies about 100 kilometres west of Goma, the provincial capital that fell to an M23 offensive earlier this year. Eastern Congo’s mountainous terrain and heavy seasonal rainfall make it particularly vulnerable to landslides and flooding.
