Bangkok police commander Auromporn Kundeesumrit said the accident occurred shortly after noon at a heavily congested railway crossing in central Bangkok.
He added that firefighters had managed to extinguish the blaze caused by the collision, while rescue teams continued to recover bodies and assist the injured.
Videos circulating on social media showed the train approaching the crossing at a moderate speed before crashing into the public bus, which immediately burst into flames.
Live coverage by Thai PBS showed that the fire was quickly brought under control before authorities cordoned off the area to allow emergency crews to carry out rescue operations.
The crossing is used daily by tens of thousands of vehicles, while the railway line runs through central Bangkok and connects to the city’s largest airport.
Transport accidents are relatively common in Thailand, where the enforcement of safety regulations is often criticised as inadequate.
