Sharjah 24: Borussia Dortmund strengthened its hold on second place in the German Bundesliga with a resounding 3-0 win over Werder Bremen, while Stuttgart moved into third place with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 17th round.

After salvaging a 3-3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the previous round with a last-minute equaliser, Dortmund returned to winning ways. They started the match in the best possible way, taking the lead in the 11th minute when Nico Schlotterbeck headed in from a cross by Norwegian Julian Ryerson.

Sealing the win

The score remained unchanged for the rest of the first half, and the situation remained the same in the second half until the 76th minute, when Austrian Marcel Sabitzer added a second goal after a pass from Felix Nmecha, celebrating his 250th Bundesliga appearance in style.

Guinean substitute Serhou Guirassy delivered the knockout blow to the visitors, ending a seven-match goal drought by scoring the third goal in the 83rd minute. The ball deflected off his English teammate, Job Bellingham, after a clearance from Amos Pepper.

With their seventh defeat of the season, Werder Bremen remain on 17 points in 12th place, with a game in hand against RB Leipzig from the previous round, which was postponed due to weather conditions.

Champions League qualification

With Bayern Munich flying high at the top and on course to retain the title, the battle for the other Champions League qualifying spots is heating up, and Dortmund has strengthened its hold on second place after raising its tally to 36 points, four points ahead of Stuttgart, which has temporarily moved into third place after turning a deficit against its guest Frankfurt into a thrilling last-minute 3-2 victory.
