Sharjah24: In a deeply moving, visually rich, and emotionally charged presence at the 10th edition of the Xposure International Photography Festival, Canadian conservation photojournalist Shane Gross brought the silent poetry of the underwater world to life, delivering a heartfelt message about the fragile, generous, and life-giving ocean he has devoted his career to documenting and protecting.

Known for his breathtaking underwater imagery and tireless commitment to marine conservation, Gross spoke with warmth, wonder, and urgency about humanity’s relationship with the sea — not as a distant landscape, but as a living, breathing, nurturing force.

In an exclusive interview with Sharjah24, Gross described the ocean as a patient, giving presence that continues to sustain humanity despite mounting pressures.

“If the ocean had a voice and could speak to us,” he said thoughtfully, “I believe she would say: if you take care of me, I will take care of you.”

Gross has spent thousands of hours beneath the waves, immersed in remote, delicate, and extraordinary marine ecosystems. Among his most magical and unforgettable encounters, he recalled, was spending weeks alongside a humpback whale mother and her calf — a rare, intimate, and trust-building experience that reshaped his understanding of interspecies connection.

“Each time we entered the water, she grew a little more comfortable, a little more welcoming,” he said. “By the end, she gently guided her calf toward us — almost like an introduction — as if she was saying we were safe, that we were not the threat. It was tender, powerful, and profoundly humbling.”

His voice softened as he added, “My hope is that we can prove that mother right.”

Gross emphasised that the ocean is not a single environment but a vast, complex, interconnected network of living systems — vibrant yet vulnerable. He stressed that science, visual storytelling, and public awareness must work together with greater intensity and sincerity.

“The more effort we invest in science and storytelling, the more clearly we understand what must be done,” he explained. “We need stronger marine protected areas. We must respect spawning seasons and leave fish undisturbed when they reproduce. We should think carefully about what we buy and what we eat. Every choice matters.”

With quiet conviction, he closed with a reminder both simple and profound: “Every second breath we take — that oxygen comes from the ocean.”

Through luminous imagery, emotional truth, and urgent storytelling, Shane Gross continues to transform underwater photography into a powerful bridge between beauty, responsibility, and hope.
