Calverley, one of the United Kingdom’s leading advertising and landscape photographers, is known for his cinematic visual style and high-impact imagery. With more than three decades of experience, he has built an international reputation through major campaigns and distinctive visual identities for clients around the world.
Speaking to Sharjah 24 on the sidelines of Xposure, Calverley said that working in open landscapes teaches photographers patience and calm in contrast to today’s fast, hyper-connected world.
He explained that spending time alone in vast natural environments and changing weather conditions strengthens a photographer’s sense of connection and awareness. “Patience out in the landscape is very important,” he said, noting that recognising the right moment comes through emotional response and intuition. “When you feel the excitement — what I call goosebumps — you know it’s the time.”
Calverley added that he is especially drawn to locations that create emotional energy, particularly waterscapes, which remind him of childhood and offer movement and feeling within the frame. He stressed that motion in landscape photography adds life and depth to images.
He concluded that strong landscape work grows from long-term engagement with nature, returning to the same places repeatedly and building an ongoing relationship with the environment.
