Sharjah 24: Asma Al Khudri, Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly Office at the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), revealed that the Emirate of Sharjah became the first Arab city to join the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities in 2016. This milestone reflects the Emirate’s vision of adopting best practices and services in the field of elderly care.

Eight key pillars supporting older people

In statements to “Sharjah 24,” Al Khudri explained that Sharjah has implemented the highest international standards across eight principal domains, including outdoor spaces and buildings, transport, civic participation and employment, community support and health services, respect and social inclusion, and housing — all of which directly and indirectly impact the lives of older people.

Green Heart Award to encourage active ageing

The Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly Office further highlighted the Department’s launch of the Green Heart Award, which encourages older people to adopt active and healthy lifestyles and celebrates their achievements. The award is divided into two age categories — 60 to 79 years, and 80 years and above — and spans four vital fields: cultural, social, professional, and health.
