Sharjah24: The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) announced the mechanisms for implementing a new water conservation initiative for citizens’ homes across the Emirate of Sharjah.

The initiative was launched in line with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and aims to install more than 750,000 water-saving devices in over 45,000 homes across various cities and regions of the emirate.

Promoting sustainability and responsible resource use

Majid Haremel Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Corporate Support at the authority, stated that the initiative aims to enhance environmental sustainability and promote a culture of responsible resource consumption. This follows the success of a previous home conservation initiative that targeted a specific segment of society in Sharjah, including beneficiaries of the inflation allowance.

Implementation mechanisms

He explained that the implementation mechanisms include eight main points: establishing a database of targeted homes, defining the budget, setting a specific timeline, distributing tasks among specialised and qualified technical teams, contacting homeowners and obtaining approval for inspection and installation, conducting field visits to install devices according to best specifications, carrying out studies and surveys to measure customer satisfaction, and conducting a final evaluation to determine savings and prepare a comprehensive report.

Awareness and impact assessment

Rashid Al Marzouqi, Director of Media and Communication at the authority, emphasised that the initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to preserving water resources, expanding the number of beneficiaries, and reducing utility bills through modern water-saving technologies. He added that the authority is providing advanced solutions and raising awareness through events in shopping centres and the distribution of educational materials explaining proper conservation practices and maintenance of devices. The initiative’s impact will be evaluated periodically to ensure its objectives are achieved.

Previous achievements

He noted that earlier phases of the home conservation initiative benefited more than 14,000 homes, with over 210,664 water- and electricity-saving devices installed. These efforts achieved a 62% reduction in water consumption and a 59% saving in lighting.

Ongoing commitment

The authority affirmed its continued efforts to cooperate with and support all segments of society in preserving the environment, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources, and promoting responsible and sustainable lifestyles to reduce waste.
