Sharjah 24 – WAM: The General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union approved a proposal submitted by the United Arab Emirates, presented by the Federal National Council delegation, calling for a resolution on the role of parliaments in safeguarding international navigation and global economic stability, with a focus on enhancing maritime security and protecting critical infrastructure during conflicts.

Key appointment and next steps

During the 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul, members also approved the appointment of Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi as rapporteur for the draft resolution, which is scheduled for adoption at the 154th IPU Assembly.

Addressing evolving nature of conflicts

Al Muhairi highlighted that modern conflicts increasingly extend beyond borders, affecting maritime routes, supply chains, energy facilities, and essential services, with direct implications for international peace and security.

Focus on maritime security and global impact

He explained that the proposal emphasizes the protection of international navigation and critical infrastructure, as well as reducing the economic and humanitarian consequences of conflicts. He noted that threats to maritime routes or ports can disrupt global trade, energy security, and humanitarian aid delivery.

Strengthening global stability efforts

Al Muhairi added that the initiative offers parliaments an important opportunity to enhance international stability, protect global economic interests, and strengthen countries’ ability to respond to the growing risks associated with modern conflicts.
