In a statement, WHO said it is monitoring and supporting a public health incident involving a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. So far, one case has been laboratory confirmed, with five additional suspected infections. Among the six affected individuals, three have died, while one remains in intensive care in South Africa.
The organisation noted that detailed investigations are underway, including further laboratory analysis and epidemiological studies. Medical care and support are being provided to both passengers and crew, while virus sequencing is also in progress.
Hantavirus infections are usually linked to environmental exposure, particularly contact with infected rodents’ urine or faeces. Although rare, the virus can occasionally spread between humans and may cause severe respiratory illness, requiring close monitoring and intensive medical care.
