Sharjah24: Sharjah Municipality (SM) announced the expansion of the Sharjah Health Safety Programme to include licensed laundry, ironing and carpet-cleaning facilities, as part of a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Middle East to enhance public health standards and service quality.

The programme is regarded as one of the municipality’s leading initiatives, aimed at promoting health awareness and raising service standards to improve the health and safety of individuals and the wider community.

The initiative includes training and qualification programmes for workers in these facilities and provides full support to ensure compliance with health regulations and standards.

Specialised multilingual training

Dr Amal Al Shamsi confirmed that the municipality continues to implement ambitious projects to expand the scope of its health programmes to cover new sectors and to strengthen its regulatory role.

She explained that the programme provides specialised health training, supported by multilingual educational materials and illustrated guidance, to simplify information delivery and enhance trainees’ understanding.

Training participation is also documented through certificates issued to both facilities and individuals.

Focus on safe workplace practices

Al Shamsi stated that the programme aims to enhance workers’ skills and improve their ability to apply safe and healthy workplace practices when washing, drying and ironing.

Training covers personal hygiene standards, clothing-sorting methods, the proper use of laundry and drying equipment, and the safe handling of detergents and chemicals.

Strict supervision and inspections

For her part, Sheikha Maha Al Mualla, Head of the Health Standards Compliance Section, said the programme is supervised in line with international best practice to ensure facilities comply with all required health standards and regulations.

She noted that the initiative is implemented in coordination with the Health Inspection Section of the Health Control and Safety Department, which conducts both routine and surprise inspections of facilities.

Expansion after success in beauty sector

Al Mualla explained that the Sharjah Health Safety Programme initially began by training workers in barbershops and beauty salons, before expanding to include laundry and carpet cleaning.

She affirmed that the municipality remains committed to continuous improvement and development to enhance the quality of services provided to residents and visitors in Sharjah.
